Aerial Tram and Rim Trail
Cannon Mountain offers an extraordinary experience. Choose a clear and calm day and travel through Franconia Notch to catch a ride on the aerial tramway. The multi person tram travels up a steep mountainside to drop you off over 4000 feet up. One of the oldest tramways in the nation, from up top you can see Mount Washington and Vermont. This breathtaking view is not for those who are afraid of heights!

Once at the top, plan to take some time walking the rim trail. the trail is well marked and easy to navigate, mostly flat. But keep kids close at hand and away from the ledge which is surprisingly close.

The trail is less than a 0.5 mile, and ends at a working fire tower that allows visitors to climb 4 flights higher. When we were there on a warm August day, there were gliders circling the mountains, and hawks soaring well below. Bring layers, it is windier up there!

Polly’s Pancake Parlor
After you work up a good appetite and your stomach settles as you return to base, start planning for brunch. Polly’s Pancake Parlor, about 15 minutes further northwest in Sugar Hill is a MUST do. Set outside of town, surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, Polly’s has been family owned for almost a hundred years. There is often a waiting line but it goes pretty fast.
At Polly’s they grind their own oat flour which they use for their legendary pancakes. Kids can make their own combo of batters and toppings. Their waffles, omelets, and side staples are all also delicious. And the complementary maple syrup products are made right there on the farm. The coffee is good and service is friendly. I dare you to leave without buying something in the quaint gift shop. We go every year, it’s worth the scenic road trip to get there.
