Update Summer 2025: I was told that some of the beach has eroded away. I was not there this year but was told it is still an awesome beach! Use caution, check tides before you head out, and look for posted signs.
Popham Beach in Midcoast Maine is a popular state park on a calm ocean beach. Walk to Fox Island for a unique adventure and views during low tide. Also on the peninsula are the impressive remains of Popham Fort. The historic fort is an interesting sidetrip for both kids and history buffs. Finish the day with fresh seafood dinner at Spinney’s.
Popham Beach State Park – Phippsburg, Maine
This beach features super soft sand and calm waves, perfect for young kids. We found the water here to be a little bit warmer than other Maine beaches.

Plan to get here early as parking is limited. The limited parking though means the beach is never too crowded. Make note of the tide schedule and high water mark before putting your umbrella up. There are bathrooms available.
The best part of this beach is that at low tide you can walk from the beach along a sand bar to Fox Island. Once there climb up to the rocky peak. It’s not too difficult for kids. However, those with mobility issues will have a hard time on the sand bar and on the island. Perfect for selfies and 360 views!

Just be sure to watch the clock and the tides. Leave plenty of time to get back to the beach before the tide starts threatening the sandbar bridge. It is a really unique and fun Maine activity that your kids will remember!

View from Fox Island
The beach extends for about 1.5 miles northeast from the parking lot. You could choose to walk all the way along the beach to Fort Popham, but that might be a bit far for small kids.

Interesting fact: Did you know that Popham was the site of the first attempted British New England settlement in 1607? That was even before Plymouth Rock. Artifacts are still being uncovered. Popham Colony 1607
Fort Popham State Historic Site
Fort Popham is an impressive structure just down the road from the beach. Built in the 1860’s during the American Civil War. The granite architecture is remarkable. The fort was in use through World War 1.

You can roam through the stone and brick tunnels with impressive arched ceilings. Peer through the small armored windows to get a feel of a soldier’s perspective.

Now it open to the public for exploration and has FREE admission! There is a small parking lot available. Takes about 45 minutes to explore. Upper floor is not wheelchair accessible.

Spinney’s Restaurant
After exploring, consider a seafood dinner and beer at Spinney’s. They have outdoor seating right on the water and a kids’ menu (about $10 each). Walkable from the Fort! Spinney’s Restaurant – Maine

Tips
- Popham Beach is extremely popular. The beach is large though. Get there early on weekends for a parking spot.
- Dogs on leashes are allowed on the beach from October through March.
- Surf fishing is allowed.
- Since we visited there was a big storm which took out some picnic areas and changed the river course. Keep small kids away from the river outlet as the sand there is reportedly less stable.
- Kids like looking underwater for shells. These are adjustable, work pretty well, and come in packs of two. EverSport Kid’s goggles – amazon (#ad)
- Like any Maine beach…you might see seals in the water. If you see seals, stay away. Seals are very cute but are also food for sharks. Stay out of the water if there are seals.
- Like many New England beachfront restaurants, Spinney’s is seasonal. This year they are still offering a snack shack over the winter. Check before you head there for seasonal hours and offerings.
